This residence is located in Kanaiwa, an old port town in Kanazawa City. Kanaiwa is designated as one of the traditional environmental preservation areas, and its traditional townscape is well preserved to this day. Here you see traditional finishes of residences and warehouses such as sun-washed cedar siding walls and black roofing tiles, and also old shrines and temples with large roofs. Wooden structure with large roof seemed to be the most natural choice in this context, so it became the starting point of my design.

この住宅が建つのは金沢市の金石という古くからの港町で、現在も当時の町並みが残り、市の伝統環境保存区域にも指定されている。その地域の風景をつくっているのは、日に焼けた杉の下見板張りの壁や黒瓦の屋根でできた住宅や倉庫、あるいは大きな屋根を持った神社仏閣などである。ここでは木造であること、屋根に勾配があることがとても自然に感じられ、あえてそれを否定せず、設計の前提条件とした。

The site is situated under difficult metrological condition, such as large amount of rain throughout the year, high temperature and humidity in summer and very low temperature with heavy amount of snow in winter. Large roof provides a good shelter against heavy rain and snow. However it blocks sunlight, so it is usually very dark inside the house, especially in wintertime in Kanazawa, so people usually uses artificial lighting even during the day. My design intention was to provide a shelter that is cool in summer and warm in winter, and also to provide sufficient natural light inside. In other words I was searching for the most appropriate form of architecture that corresponds to its natural environment such as sunlight, wind and change in temperature according to seasons.

一年を通じて雨が多く、また夏暑く、冬は雪が降り積もる厳しい気候に対し、大きな屋根を持つ木造の建物はシェルターとして優れている反面、曇りがちな冬の金沢では採光が難しく、多くの住宅では日中から照明を点すのが当たり前になっている。夏涼しく冬暖かい快適なシェルターであることと、自然採光による明るい室内空間を共に実現させること、つまり太陽光や自然通風、季節による寒暖といった自然環境に対応した、この場所固有の最適な建築のかたちを考えてみたかった。

It was necessary to provide sufficient direct sunlight into the house in order to get enough heat and light inside. By making skylights in the roof, you can get enough natural light and heat into the house. However it inevitably increases cooling load in summer, so it is difficult to maintain comfortable environment throughout the year. Consequently I decided to make high side windows instead of skylights. High side windows facing due south provide same amount of direct sunlight as skylights in winter. On the other hand by setting eaves with appropriate depth, you can block intense direct sunlight in summer.

冬に明るく暖かい室内空間を実現するには、建物内に多くの直射日光を導く必要がある。たとえば屋根にトップライトを設ければ、直射日光が射し込み、日中は明るく暖かい空間になるだろう。しかしトップライトは夏の冷房負荷を著しく増大させてしまうため、通年の快適性を考慮すれば採用が難しい。そこでハイサイドライトを屋根に設けること考えた。真南向きのハイサイドライトは、冬にはトップライトと同等の直射日光を取得する一方、適切な長さの庇を設けることで夏には直射日光が室内に入るのを防ぐことができる。

After carefully considering configuration and orientation of the site and relationship with surrounding houses, I did some design studies of slanted roofs with high side windows that are facing due south, and I came up with a rather unique design of a large shed roof with two high side windows that are cut diagonally. We created digital model of this roof and studied solar angles in order to block intense direct sunlight in summer days (till August 24th) when the highest temperature exceeds 30℃ in Kanazawa City. As a result we decided on the most appropriate configuration of the roof and the right size of the windows.

敷地形状と方位、周辺の建物との関係性を考慮し、勾配のある屋根に真南向きのハイサイドライトを設ける屋根形状のスタディを行った結果、片流れの大きな屋根に2つのハイサイドライトが斜めに切り込まれたような独特のかたちが出来上がった。

この形状をモデリングし、日射を解析することで、金沢の例年の最高気温が30度を超える8月24日までの直射日光が室内に入らないように確認を行いながら、最適と考えられる屋根形状と開口部の大きさを決定した。

Due to the particular configuration it was a rather complicated and non-traditional roof framing. And our local carpenters, who are experts on traditional roof framing construction, did an excellent job in constructing this unique roof.

この伝統的とは言えない木造の屋根を見事に組み上げたのが、伝統的な技術を持った地元の大工であったことは実に興味深かった。

Because of the difference of elevation under the roof, room temperature is kept cool from natural ventilation due to buoyancy. And in winter warm air beneath the ceiling is being circulated with duct fans. So dynamic thermal environments inside the house are kept in good balance throughout the year.

内部の空間に生まれた天井の高低を利用することで、夏は重力換気により室温を下げ、冬には天井付近に溜まった暖気をダクトファンによって循環させることで、屋根の下の大きな空間の温熱環境の平準化を図っている。

By living under this roof, one can closely feel the blue sky, the sun, cloud, rain and snow, and be conscious of subtle changes in the natural environments of passing seasons.

屋根を身近に感じることのできるこの住宅では、青い空と太陽、雲や雨、ときには雪といった刻々と移ろいゆく変化をより繊細に感じながら生活を営むことができるだろう。
